Bubby’s Place

Founded in 2024, Bubby’s Place serves foster families and communities across Hampton Roads.

At Bubby's Place is an organization that believes every child deserves the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their circumstances. Founded by former foster parents who remain connected with the children they’ve cared for, Bubby’s Place is dedicated to providing resources, hope, and a brighter future for foster children and their caretakers. Their mission is to serve social service communities throughout Hampton Roads, Virginia, with a primary focus on Western Tidewater. Their reach extends to Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Newport News, Hampton, and other surrounding cities.

Making a lasting impact in three key areas of foster care needs:

  1. Supporting Caretakers — Supplying essentials like diapers, wipes, baby clothes, and other necessities to ensure infants and toddlers in foster care are safe, comfortable, and loved.

  2. Empowering School-Age Kids — Providing shoes, clothing, school supplies, and funding for field trips, sports, and extracurricular activities so every child can embrace their education and reach their full potential.

  3. Launching Bright Futures — Assisting foster children aging out of the system at 18 by offering scholarships for college and funding for trade school tools, helping them transition to independence and success.

Bubby’s Place was founded with love and firsthand experience. Founders Tom & Wendy Powell have witnessed the challenges faced by foster families and remain deeply connected to their former foster children. This personal connection inspires their mission and commitment to supporting the Hampton Roads foster community.

Business Consortium for Arts Support

Founded in 1987, the Business Consortium for Arts Support broadens the base of business support for our area arts and cultural organizations and provides a convenient method of business giving.   The Consortium provides a way of distributing funds not usually available to individual corporate donors by:

  • Providing a professional means of coordinating support.

  • Developing a degree of accountability.

  • Evaluating the relative needs and merits of each organization.

  • Providing a means of giving to a large number of arts groups (currently 38) through one single contribution.

For over 30 years, the BCAS has provided nearly $25 million in general operating support to more than 45 different area arts groups. For many of these nonprofits, the Consortium provides their single largest source of unearned income. 

BCAS members are businesses and foundations that contribute a minimum of $2,500 annually to our Arts Fund. Expanded benefits are available for those contributing at higher levels. After an annual grant application process, a committee of member representatives, then distributes the Arts Fund to our area arts and cultural organizations for general operating support.

The Chas Foundation

Established in 2012 in memory of Tucker Corprew’s son, Charles H. Kirkwood (Chas), who suffered from bipolar disorder and ultimately lost his life to suicide. The organization began as a grassroots movement to significantly change the perception of people suffering from mental illness and enhance the quality of life of those individuals.

Mission

  • Advocate for mentally ill individuals

  • Strive for public acceptance of those dealing with a mental illness

  • Increase access to effective treatment for the mentally ill

  • Save lives of those dealing with a mental illness by working with private and public professionals

  • Provide support, through education, for family members dealing with their loved one’s mental illness

Vision

  • In the Hampton Roads region, individuals suffering with mental illness and their caretakers will find resources for effective support and treatment


Veteran’s Homefront

Following his honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy in 2009, CEO Antione was a decorated yet unemployed veteran who came home to a community unprepared to meet his & his daughters needs.

Recognizing an opportunity for service and leadership, Antione spent years volunteering with Chesapeake and the surrounding cities to fight homelessness and unemployment. At the same time, he accomplished two internships, a fellowship with The Mission Continues, and completed his third bachelor’s degree. All while unemployed, battling depression & periodic homelessness.

In 2012, as Chairman of Virginia Father’s Day Initiatives, Antione coordinated the Housing Authorities across the state of Virginia to hold events to promote fathers reconnecting with their children.

Antione is a true trailblazer – a driven, results oriented expert in building community and interpersonal relationships. He is a now a widely recognized strategic advisor on the issue of homelessness & community engagement. Antione is a gifted social entrepreneur who brings passion, commitment, and a wealth of civic experience to VHF.

Realizing the enormity of the need, Antione reached out and enlisted the aid of additional support through churches, non-profits, consulting organizations and community volunteers to support his vision.

Together, they are poised to be groundbreaking change agents in Hampton Roads and beyond.
